And the space between us continues to grow

Risograph print, 2021

And the space between us continues to grow was created as the part of ELCAF haul pack for the tenth anniversary. This A5 zine has a series of drawings confined within rectangular boxes, accompanied by various individual words. There is no beginning or end to the story- this is intentional as Seo Hye wanted to allow readers to piece together the writings and drawings so that it is only their interpretation of the story presented within the zine.

The story's premise is based on her experience as a deaf individual during the time of Covid-19. In particular, she wanted to explore the difficulties she has faced during this time such as needing to wear a mask and interact with people based on their body language without being able to read lips. She has incorporated animals into my drawings to show a duality between humans and the natural world. For this purpose, she decided the jaguar was the perfect animal to use as it is known for being a scarce, solitary species famous for its physical and behavioural adaptions in the wild. Seo Hye wanted to overlap the narrative of the jaguar surviving in the wild with herself surviving in the world by adapting to a new environment.

A two-page zine spread features a figure with a blue leopard in a grey cityscape, a white sneaker with blue shading, and layered black and blue leaves concealing a spotted blue leopard in a serene scene.
A two-page zine spread depicts a leopard’s profile on a blue and black gradient background on the left, mirroring a masked person’s side profile on the right, drawn with clean lines and a minimalist aesthetic.
